There’s a new feeling in my chest lately, like I can’t catch my breath, even though I am breathing totally normally and my heart is not racing. I lay down and I still feel as if I’m on the edge of my seat. The edge of something. There is so much bad news everywhere and if you listen too closely it feels entirely hopeless and honestly, pretty scary.
I don’t have a solution for any of that, but here are a few little things bringing me joy lately, giving my nervous system a break:
Sunshine beaming into my bedroom in the morning, catching the disco ball and prisms hanging in the window, throwing dots and rainbows around the room. It’s beautiful and magical. Best way to wake up.
Taking my little dog for longer walks now that the ice has finally melted
Borrowing dvds from my local library. I love taking a weekly trip to the library to browse movies, hold things in my hands, disconnect from the internet and be in my community for an hour or so. We have a new video store opening up in my town soon and I can’t wait for even more opportunity for this experience!!
Listening to the birds chirping, telling me spring is on the way
Saying hi to dogs! Sometimes I remember to say hello to the person they are with. Meeting new animals brings me a lot of joy. Dogs are the best!
Daydreaming about starting our first garden. I’ve never grown food before! I’m intimidated but ready to try.
Daydreaming about house projects and getting more settled into our new home. We want to paint every room a different shade of earthy pink. Really warm things up.
Planning out my next mail club offering
Trying to sell quilts and artwork while the state of things feels so tough and chaotic is really hard. But we need art! I keep trying to remind myself of this. It feels like a frivolous privilege but it is my livelihood. This is the path I have chosen. So I will keep making my quilts to bring warmth and color into your homes and I will keep creating tiny poetry art pieces to tether us all to something bigger.
If you would like to support my practice, I have turned on paid subscriptions for this newsletter. It would mean SO much to me. I got my very first paid subscriber this morning and I can’t even explain all the emotions it made me feel!! I’m going to show up to this space more. I think it’ll be really nice to be away from Instagram. I’m excited to share more! Movies I’m watching and loving, books I’m getting absorbed in, songs I’m listening to on repeat, artists I’m deep-diving into. It will be less about marketing my products for sale, though a bit of that sprinkled in, depending on what I’m working on. Maybe just a little ‘studio notes’ section. A separate email list? I’ll figure that out.
If you’re on this list because you’ve been carried over from my Secret Holiday days and are no longer interested in what I’m up to: please feel free to unsubscribe. No hard feelings at all! We all receive so many emails these days - I don’t want to be an unwanted nuisance in your inbox :)
Thank you for being here!
