Premier League Week 1 — Latest

The opening weekend of the Premier League season continued today with five games across the afternoon and evening.

Hull City caused an upset in the opening game, beating Manchester United 2-0.

There were wins for Everton and Leeds United, as well as a victory for newly promoted Ipswich Town in the matches played at 3pm.

And Brentford ended the day with a big 3-0 win against a sorry Tottenham side despite their summer spending,

The first Saturday of the season is done but fear not, there are another four games to come in the Premier League this weekend.

Three of them come tomorrow and then the action concludes on Monday evening with a west London derby — we'll be live for all four matches so make sure to join us again on The Athletic.

Tomorrow

  • Brighton vs Aston Villa — 2pm
  • Manchester City vs Bournemouth — 2pm
  • Newcastle vs Liverpool — 4:30pm

Monday

And the bottom half?

With how much money they have both spent this summer, it is indefensible that Tottenham and Manchester United are spending any time in the relegation zone this season.

Dreadful opening-day performances for both teams who have immediately ruined any pre-season optimism they had built up coming into this league campaign.

How does all that leave the Premier League table?

Six games down on opening weekend and I don't think there'd have been many Premier League fans expecting to see Hull and Ipswich start with wins.

Arsenal are setting the pace again, but are joined on the same goal difference by Brentford who were superb this evening — and they would have gone top on their own had Igor Thiago scored his penalty.

Semi Ajayi's only previous Premier League experience came back in the 2020-21 season with West Brom, but you'd hardly know based on his performance against Manchester United.

As well as smashing in Hull's opening goal from Oli McBurnie's saved shot, Ajayi was solid at the back, making five clearances and winning all of his duels in the air and on the ground.

He and defensive partner Nobel Mendy, a recent signing from Rayo Vallecano, were unlikely goalscoring heroes for Hull, befitting the unlikely victory against United.

Both will be crucial as the newly promoted side look to maintain their top-flight status this season.

Tottenham fail to turn over a new leaf

I was fascinated to see how Tottenham would fare after overhauling their squad in the summer, but they massively underwhelmed against Brentford today.

They were frail at the back and overrun in midfield. New signing Sandro Tonali, brought in at huge expense, had little impact in midfield, and Mateus Fernandes, despite showing flashes of brilliance with some incisive passing, had a tall order to turn the game around in the second half.

Key players are due to come back from injury so things will undoubtedly improve, but so far it has been a case of new season, same Tottenham.

De Zerbi apologises for defeat: 'We were not ready to fight'

A tough first game of the season for Tottenham and their manager Roberto De Zerbi, who was characteristically honest when he spoke to Sky Sports.

💬 “We suffered physically, but we knew that before the game. We were not ready to fight in the duels. We made a lot of mistakes in pressure moments. We lost too many duels to compete with Brentford and I'm sorry for that — I'm sorry for the defeat.

“We have to improve our physicality, we have to improve our organisation because there were many new players. But it is the first game, it's a part of our journey.”

Most impressive performance of the day

This one is harder to pick with a number of standout individuals on winning teams today but my vote goes to Julio Enciso.

The Ipswich Town man lit up Portman Road with his performance against Sunderland before being forced off with injury — that is one way for a new signing to make their mark.

He was key to Ipswich's first goal and looks set to be a key creative force for Gary O'Neil's team moving forward.

Disappointing performance of the day

My vote for underwhelming performance of the day goes to Manchester United and specifically Bejamin Sesko.

Sometimes you can try and be clever with a pick like this but in this case, both the striker and his team were seriously disappointing in a match they should have won with ease against newly-promoted Hull City.

Expectations are always high at Old Trafford but perhaps more so after their bounce under Michael Carrick last season. Today was a flat performance from the United of old before he took over.

Two days into the season, there are some unlikely names at the top of the FPL points list.

  • Nobel Mendy (Hull) — 15 points
  • Michael Kayode (Brentford) — 14
  • Mamadou Sangare (Brentford) — 14
  • Semi Ajayi (Hull) — 14
  • Anton Stach (Leeds) — 13

Just to compound their woes, that was Tottenham's joint-heaviest defeat on the opening day of the Premier League season — they also lost 3-0 to Manchester United in 2011.

They were also on the receiving end of an expected goals tally of 3.96 for Brentford, which is the most Spurs have suffered since playing Liverpool in December 2024.

The rise of Mamadou Sangare

This was an extremely impressive Premier League debut from Mamadou Sangare. An assist and a commanding performance in midfield, he walks away with the player of the match award.

His club record fee of €48million (£41.1m) looks to be money very spent by Brentford.

Before the season, Tom Burrows looked at why Sangare is “the new diamond of football in Mali”, and you can read all about the 24-year-old's rise here.

And those results follow on from the first match of the new 2026-27 season, which saw defending champions Arsenal run out 3-0 winners against newly-promoted Coventry City last night.

That Brentford win rounds out a big round of Premier League matches today — as a reminder here are the final results from the day's action:

12:45pm

  • Hull City 2-0 Manchester United (Ajayi, Mendy)

3pm

  • Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace (Dewsbury-Hall, Barry)
  • Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds United (Stach)
  • Ipswich Town 2-1 Sunderland (Emersonn, Clarke; Angulo)

5:30pm

  • Brentford 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur (Lewis-Potter, Janelt, Kayode)

Collins: ‘The start we wanted’

Having dropped the F-bomb and apologised for his choice language, Brentford's Nathan Collins discussed their opening-day win on Sky Sports.

💬 “It's the start we wanted; we wanted to start bright, start sharp, we want to show people what we're made of and that's what we did today.

“Last season hurt, we were one point off (qualifying for Europe). We've added quality, good people to the squad and we wanted to show what we were about again.”

In the big upset of the day, Hull City secured their first ever Premier League victory against Manchester United earlier (played 11, won one, drawn two, lost eight) and their first league win against them since November 1974 in the second tier.

It's United's fourth Premier League opening-day loss in the last seven seasons (three wins), and their first opening-day defeat against a newly promoted side out of 14 (10 wins, three draws, one loss).

They have had a combined 43 shots in their last two season-beginning fixtures, scoring zero.

Hull have four opening-season wins from six, the highest such win percentage in Premier League history (66.7 per cent).

Sage: ‘We gave up a little bit’

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage gave his thoughts on his side's performance in their 2-0 defeat against Everton earlier today.

💬 “I think our first half should have put us ahead, but we didn't score and then made mistakes. We have to take positives and convert into very good things. Sometimes you deserve but don't score.

“In the second half had less energy. I made the substitutions because I thought we could play more dynamic, but it didn't happen.

“We gave up a little bit. We have to understand when it's 2-0 the game is not over.”

Brentford mean business this season

Across their last three games, which includes two pre-season fixtures, Brentford have scored 14 goals and conceded three.

They've hit the ground running this season and could have a fine campaign ahead of them.

Keith Andrews' team look settled and full of confidence — the complete opposite to what we saw from Spurs today.

Brentford, who have probably been the Premier League's best side in pre-season, were always going to be incredibly tough opponents on the opening day.

Well-coached, settled and high on confidence, they look as though the train will keep travelling at high pace towards success, providing their European campaign does not block their tracks.

Tottenham, however, are at the start of their journey under De Zerbi, and their performance showed that. Attacking reinforcements will undoubtedly help, but coherence may take a while longer than hoped and expected to arrive.

How far can Brentford go this season?

How far can Brentford go this season?

Brentford have repeatedly punched above their weight since arriving in the Premier League.

On three of their five seasons they have finished in the top half, and last campaign just missed out on qualifying for Europe. Ambitions will be high this season, and now even higher on the basis of this performance.

Could we see Brentford challenging at the sharp end of the table? It wouldn't be a surprise. They look energetic and organised today, controlling the game in midfield and scoring three nicely worked goals.
