Fedora Abu · Late Filing

Hello and welcome back to a late edition of The Digest. How’s it going? Besides still being in mourning from the England loss this week, I’ve just started a new nine-to-five contract with a fragrance brand, hence why this is landing in your inbox on a Friday instead of Thursday. The goal for the next two months while I’m doing this job is to run things BAU, but I hope you’ll forgive me if newsletters arrive a day or two late or at slightly unusual hours while I try to juggle everything. (Today’s ‘Friday feature’ will be with you tomorrow.)

As always, I’ve got four sections for you: The Edit for shopping, Going Out for stuff worth leaving the house for (mostly restaurants and bars this week), Cultural Radar for books and art exhibitions and so forth, and then Talking Points for ‘hot topics’. The full thing is exclusive to paid subscribers.

This week’s issue covers: some gems from St Agni, an LA sportswear brand to know, pistachio ice cream in Islington, super-hot Thai food and ice-cold crudo in Soho, a three-day literary festival, a collection of short stories I’m hoping will break my reading rut, a photography exhibition in south London, what the latest beauty trend really means, a Substack I’m loving at the moment, and a response to T Magazine’s dinner party etiquette guide.

Nine things worth shopping this week

  1. Sir does the best flirty summer dresses. This one is 100% linen and looks even better from the back. £360

  2. Is it time for me to get onto Steve Madden? (I feel like it’s not as big a thing here in the UK.) I was personally seduced by these flip-flop wedges in the shoe gallery in Selfridges. £140

  3. I’m a fan of slouchy pinstripe trousers as an easy swap for jeans when you want your outfit to be a little smarter and more interesting to look at. These are from St Agni and currently on sale. £228 (originally £380)

  4. The answer to what to wear to bed in this heat (besides nothing): this Bluebella camisole and shorts set. It’d be hard not to feel like an absolute hottie in something like this. £55

  5. Full credit to Otegha from Add to Wishlist for bringing Made Some’s shorts to my attention. I need these in my life badly. £212 on FRWD

  6. Also a Selfridges spot: this crochet mini dress for the beach from Monday Swimwear. Everything these guys do is very sexy and body-forward if you’re about that. £160

  7. Joseph is doing a bunch of crinkly clothes right now and I’m into it, especially this olive-green tank top. £195

  8. Another piece from St Agni (new season this time): this zebra print camisole in silk. Fabulous on its own, even better with the matching skirt. £300

  9. I love the shape and texture of this canvas bag from Staud. One for casual weekends when you don’t fancy lugging around a full-sized tote. £310

Places and experiences worth leaving the house for

Loewe at The Dreamery
  • There’s still availability for Khaobird’s Culpeper rooftop takeover in Shoreditch tomorrow. And if you can’t make it, you should head down to their restaurant in Soho instead if you haven’t already. I did that earlier this week with my food-obsessed friend Toni, who’d already given it her stamp of approval. Honestly, this is exactly the sort of food that tends to excite me the most: spicy, packed with flavour, creative, not ‘modern European’. But even so, I was extra impressed and I’m adding it to my list of go-to places whenever I’m in Central. Highlights were the shan meatballs and mutton fries. So so good.

  • Last night, a bunch of London media people congregated at ice cream and wine bar The Dreamery in Islington. The occasion: a pistachio ice cream collaboration with Loewe to celebrate the launch of their new candle. I’m incredibly cynical about the sheer volume of brand activations these days (why is everything marketing?), and it’s rare I feature one in Going Out because most of them are gimmicky. But I did think this was a pretty fun, well-executed idea by a brand that I vibe with. It’s running until 30 July.
