Recently I was a guest on CBC Blue Sky, talking about the sociology of fear with host Sam Maciag and University of Regina professor Dr. Cassandra Ozog. The conversation was a real treat and in a lot of ways a throwback to one of my now-dormant podcasts, “Weird, Together”, hosted with my friend Dr. Joseph Comeau.

“Weird, Together” ran from August 2022 to July 2024, with every episode breaking down the sociological themes behind a different independent horror film. The show started as a life video podcast reviewing paranormal documentaries on the Ghost Story Guys YouTube channel. A problem quickly manifested itself - most paranormal documentaries are some combination of boring or fraudulent, forcing a quick pivot to reviewing horror films in general. When that show turned out to be an uneasy fit with GSG, we spun it off into an audio-only podcast and that’s when it really started to mature.

Joseph is a tenured sociology professor from the state of Georgia and breaking down the films with him challenged my brain in ways I found deeply gratifying. It also provided a bit of a relief valve for political conversations that otherwise would have found their way into Ghost Story Guys.

Our schedules eventually forced the show into permanent hiatus just as we were hitting our stride but I’m enormously proud of the thirty audio episodes we released during those two years.

Personal favorite shows were:

“Landlocked” (US | Found footage about the poisonous lure of nostalgia)
“Terrible Things/The Wyrm of Bwlch Pen Barras” (Ireland & Wales | Shorts films about generational burdens)
“Enys Men” (UK | Cornish folk horror)
