Hi all,
I’ve been reflecting on one year of blogging and I’ve decided on some changes to both my writing process and what I share via Substack and email.
Until now I’ve used this Substack as a newsletter, roundups of everything new since the last edition. This is changing: I’ll instead only be sharing individual articles on here, the longer pieces I put real time into. When one is ready, I’ll put it out the same day it’s on the blog. I’m aiming for regular Saturday publishing, once or twice a month.
Quick, low-effort posts, which I call notes, will no longer be published on Substack or arrive in your inbox. They’ll only live on the blog and be shared on social media. Instead, every article will end with the titles of notes I published since the last article, purely as a “P.S.”, so you can catch up if you’re curious.
If you’d rather get everything as it happens, the best option for now is either RSS (see the subscribe page) or following me on social media (Bluesky, Mastodon, X). And if you genuinely want every post by email, reply and tell me. If there’s enough interest, I’ll set it up properly.
Now that the “what” is out of the way, I want to briefly touch on the “why”. I want stronger separation between the quick thoughts I spend an hour writing up and the long, careful posts I spend weeks thinking about and crafting. The newsletter flattened this distinction and made it so everything was given equal weighting.
This dissonance also affected my writing: it would both make me not want to write many notes (because I didn’t want to pollute the newsletter and drown out articles) and put pressure on timing my articles correctly so they would slot in between notes, meaning I either rushed articles or kept them unpublished for longer than I would have liked. If you want to know even more, I’ve written up a longer note on the blog talking through my thoughts.
The first article in the new Substack format should hit your inbox tomorrow!
All in all, I want to thank you all for subscribing and reading! I’ve had a lot of fun writing and it’s gratifying to know that people out there are interested in what I’m saying :)
Best,
Lalit
