If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s hunting for treasures. I have a few rules I tend to abide by when I’m shopping while traveling:
I avoid chain stores or anything I can easily get at home. If I’m buying clothing, it’s almost always from a local retailer.
Since I own a clothing boutique, I’m usually more focused on things for the home.
Antiques are always at the top of my list, especially oil paintings.
I rarely buy books because I read on a Kindle, but I love supporting independent booksellers. I always stock up on journals, cards, pens and stationery. If you’ve ever received a thank-you or birthday card from me, there’s a good chance it came from abroad.
As for getting everything home, I always pack a foldable duffel bag and check a bag on the way back. NEVER on the way there. I’ve experienced a lost bag once, and I’m still traumatized.
