Happy Friday Coaches!! July is here! That means AAU Season part 2 is right around the corner. Cal Stars will be in Las Vegas July 9-13 and Chicago July 23-27 for the final two EYBL stops. Exciting times for sure!!

This week’s basketball share includes a transition action we utilized this year, a defensive basketball term/concept I came across recently that I LOVE, and ideas for your BLOB series as you look ahead to next season!

The CHIN Series in the Princeton Offense can be a nice action for any team and offense. For many years I’ve incorporated a simple CHIN screen action off dead ball touches, end of clock opportunities, and delayed transition and wrinkled it to the strengths of our players. This year’s squad had some length at the PG and some athleticism at the Post position so we wrinkled our attack to take advantage of those skill sets. Some years if the trailer is a shooter we’ll run the traditional FLARE action. If you want to post up your 2 or 3 guards just run the FORWARDS up and get your wings in the same actions. There are numerous actions out of CHIN that can help any offense.
2. I love picking up NEW vocabulary words to help teach concepts. Scanning coaching stuff recently Coach Mike Jagacki used the term PLUG used to describe players jamming up driving lanes/gaps in transition defense. I’ve used the term FLOOD to help our players get to the ball side, so the term PLUG to describe the idea of the trailer defender flooding/cheating to the ball was one I liked. It’s a common concept I think most coaches teach, but the added vocabulary word often makes a concept or strategy much clearer for players.

3. Baseline OB’s! A great opportunity to score! In addition to our actions, we teach our team to make READS based on how the opponent is guarding the blocks. QUICK LOBS and DIAGONAL PASSES can lead to easy baskets, often catching defenders by surprise. Whatever sets or actions you run, it’s worth it to teach some simple reads to your players to catch a defender not ready.
