MENAGE A TROIS

Simultaneously

Seated

In the truck stop diner

I took in Hank Williams jukebox

And neon pink midnight

Reflected on asphalt

Outside rainy Louisville night

And one solitary lady crying

As if fat and forty

Were fair and young with

Hank Williams singing

I thought I had seen pretty girls

In my life

But that was before I met…

Him: It’s funny about me and kids

I thumbed around a lot myself

And know how it is;

And if we can make Raleigh by morning

A piece of pie, please

I always like to give kids a lift

He’s maybe a runaway

But what the hell

I’d highball it straight between

Her sweet little

I’d like

More coffee

Raining like hell

 And if we jackknife

I’d be bawling too

Dumb fat broad

I hope she’s got a momma

Somewhere, to dry her tears

Here kid

I’ll take care of the tab

Her: He promised me stardust and moonlight

I thought he was for me

Not like the others

He was handsome

And Hank Williams

Will always mess a girl up

It’s in their blood

It’s what I gave him

He wanted it so bad

They always go

So long sonny

So long mister

Look them over out the window

He kicked the tire goodbye

Mister goodbye

Come back and

See me sometime

When the moon comes over the mountains

And it’s sunny all over again

Who to her own tears

We left

And the tight-assed pretty waitress

A coffee tip and a minute later

The diesel roar & smokestack exhaust.

Rolling toward Raleigh

Through the rain

Of this American night.
