“What more do you need? But they always want more. I gave you my all; I been here before; I kill shit of course. Kick in the door, waving 44, in Jordan IV’s on April 4” -Jerreau (Hold It Down)
In the past I struggled with how to encompass and explain all that I do without it sounding convoluted or all over the place. I was concerned that I’d lose people by exploring and expressing my many different interests. I no longer worry about that, but it’s still nerve-racking to share new avenues of creative expression. I felt this the first time I shared a painting publicly, created a deck, started a business, wrote a book, etc. It comes with the territory of being true to yourself and wherever the creativity and inspiration takes you. In November of 2025 I had this strong desire to start capturing my thoughts and emotions into poems. I own many poetry books, but I never had the desire to write my own poetry until that day. I decided whenever I felt like I had something to write, I would. I created a folder for each day I wrote and saved the poems in each one.
As the number of folders grew, I noticed my overall expression in this art form was extremely intimate, honest and vulnerable - more-so than I think I’ve ever been, which caught me by surprise and made me a lil bit uncomfortable, but that sounds like growth to me! Instead of shying away from this, I opened up more and dove deeper. It’s funny because when we start new things, we don’t really know how it will be received or perceived, but it doesn’t matter. When passion, authenticity and effort are involved, the work will be felt. It’s pure alignment that the timing of this coincides with National Poetry Month.
So here I am, kicking in the proverbial door, on 4/4 with a poem in hand:
This is the first of more poetry I plan to share; if you happen to be a fan of poetry, there’s something coming. I guess this is me officially adding ‘poet’ to my titles.
Substack is the obvious first place to share this work and if you’re signed up here you’ll automatically get updates on this upcoming self-published poetry collection. Can’t wait to share more of my writing along with other products I’m releasing soon. As an artist, I feel extremely motivated to create to honor honest expression. It feels like a responsibility and I believe I’m making the best and most important work of my career thus far.
