Blessing: Fire

is proximity;
two things that lie near
persuading each other
to be more.
Except a spark to start,
it sustains
as long as the fuel
is close.
Not too close.
Fire needs room
to breathe,
draw oxygen,
inspiration
from the world,
to explain itself
in flames.
So remember,
loved-and-lovers,
to keep each other close.
We sanctify
your closening.
But let the other breathe.
We celebrate
your freedom.
Do not forget
for you, as
for all, that
fire is a creative force:
some seeds
only sprout
when their shells
are charred.
Respect
your fire,
as you do
each other.
If you do not
it will only
consume
everything.
Never ever
think it weak;
we swathed
the largest tree
on earth in foil
to separate
it from
that destiny.
But embrace yours--
this bright-joined life
of flame and glory--
and if you ever wake
to feel your bond
approximate:
roll closer;
take a deep breath.

Breath is always a blessing.
