Going deep here, I’ll admit that acquiring and having “trust” is easier for some than others. And it’s not generally something we ponder much; I only think about it when I’m facing a change or transition that feels very much out of my control. I always ask the question, ‘Is this something I can change or something I must surrender to?’ And the latter, my friend, requires me to trust. This invisible ingredient of trust is essential to living a calm life. It is like baking soda is to cookie dough. It is trust that allows you to rise with confidence and step into your day feeling steady on your feet, no matter what your day brings.
Today, I want to take a look at trust as a catalyst for our spirituality and healthy psychological functioning. Let’s acknowledge how important trust is to our lives, because without it, we can become lost in a sea of confusion, worry, and fear. Without trust, we might as well be a boat without oars trying to navigate stormy seas as we find our way to shore. When defining where you are on the trust scale, meaning how much trust you are generating and operating with, each of us has to answer for ourselves the deeper question:
Trust in what?
Here’s my personal inquiry, but I invite you to pull out pen and paper and answer these questions for yourself.
Trust in God? Yes, that works for me.
Trust in the universe? It depends on whether you consider it friendly, and I do.
Trust in the Divine? If you believe there is divine order and grace, and I do.
Trust in love? Unequivocally, yes, with absolute certainty.
Trust in Source? Where the light of Home is the One place of LOVE we come from and return to.
Trust in others? Only the trustworthy.
Trust in science? Yes, but there’s so much more that is felt and not seen.
Trust in your truth—the truth of who you are in your heart and soul.
Trust in your highest self—the you who is aligned with divine truth and love. The one that allows your light to grow and shine brightly. The one who is not your ego.
Yes, indeed, I trust my highest self, who is aligned with spirit and listens to the divine knowings that stir my heart and says, all will be well.
It is the power of faith that gives us our spiritual trust fund, and it grows by noticing validating experiences that reveal small miracles of all kinds, often with a good helping of kismet. While not all outcomes or circumstances may turn out exactly as we want all the time, there is an inner voice that reigns over doubt and fear—a knowing that consistently whispers that all will work out as it should. Your ability to be resilient as you face challenges increases your optimism, and trust is the sustaining fuel for resilience. Without faith and trust, worry will flame anxiety.
For those who can trust their experiences over time—who have built faith by seeing signs that somehow point us toward meaning—there comes an understanding that life is not happening to us, but rather for us. Even when we can’t yet see why. We trust the process of transformation.
And that period of waiting and inquiry, while you may be traversing unknown territory and navigating difficulty?
It requires trust.
Faith is holding steady with a high-level belief that somehow—and I say this to myself all the time—“It will all be okay. No matter what.”
Somehow, even in our darkest moments, with trust and faith, the gold reveals itself. Maybe not immediately. Maybe not in the form we expected. But over time, life has a way of showing us what has been taking shape within us all along: a growing trust fund of spiritual wealth.
For the person who doesn’t believe that life holds meaning beyond circumstance, it must feel exhausting to live at the effect of every challenge and disappointment. Fear begins to pervade every thought, and anxiety grows like a snowball that starts small and gains momentum. Living this way would be a living hell to me.
If there is one thing I could offer that person, it would simply be this: search for something—anything—that grows your connection to spirit, which is available to you at any time. A moment in nature. A feeling of awe as you watch the sun rise or set. A deep breath in and a longer exhale. An unexpected act of kindness. The wisdom that whispers to you when your mind finally settles down.
For those who don’t believe in a higher form of existence that we are aligned with and attuned to, the world can become a very frightening place. The more caught up we become in the illusion of the material world alone, the more disconnected and lost we feel in the spiritual realm. Both exist together, and this lifetime, in this body, is the bridge.
There are two ways to live this life—and a bridge between them.
There is the material world that is here for us to enjoy, touch, taste, and feel.
And there is the spiritual world that is invisible, but always present.
When you remember that you are a spiritual being having a human experience—that’s when trust becomes real. It’s all good. It’s all going to be okay.
Trust is the bridge that allows us to hold both worlds in this one precious life we get to live. Trust in that.
