As one book gets closer and closer to launch, a new one has its first sentences written.
Where Lost Girls Go will be released this July (you can preorder it here), and as I begin that roll out, I also find myself at the very beginning of a brand new project. I can’t talk about that new book in detail just yet - in part because it’s still being born. So much exploration happens in a first draft that if I told you about the premise now, it might look different in several months.
That said, I do want to bring all of you with me on my journey - from beginning to end - with this new project. In an age where so many people try to bypass the creative process with things like AI, I think it can be valuable to share what creating something really looks like - the good, the bad, and the ugly - and why that process, as challenging as it can be, is beautiful.
So, starting next week, I’ll be turning this Substack into a log of my journey as I write this new book. Since I can’t share much about the plot yet, we’ll give it the codename Project Fool’s Journey (or PFJ if I’m feeling lazy), and I’ll share weekly updates on my writing habits, my victories, my stumbling blocks, and any interesting experiences that crop up as I work on this book and its subsequent drafts.
I’ll also take questions about the process in the comments of these posts.
Now, those of you familiar with The Fool’s Journey probably can guess where this is going, but for anyone unfamiliar - “The Fool’s Journey” is a name given to the narrative arc that follows The Fool - the first card of the tarot - through the rest of the Major Arcana. I love tarot, both for it’s art and for the ways it can be used in storytelling, so I thought it might be fun to frame this journal around the Fool’s Journey, and possibly even into the Minor Arcana.
Every post will be framed around a tarot card, starting next week with The Fool, using the card as a central theme and sort of prompt for exploring the various aspects of writing a novel.
