Rachel Kobetz · Defining Experience

Hi all!

Here’s your weekly dose of DX Perspective, a list of what I’m exploring and thinking about. Feel free to forward this along to friends.

  • What The System Rewards – Strong leaders don’t join companies to be comfortable. They join to build, stretch, and leave something better behind. Whether that instinct compounds or quietly disappears has very little to do with talent. It has everything to do with what the system rewards.

  • The Anthropic Hive Mind by Steve Yegge – Steve talked to dozens of Anthropic employees and came away with a portrait of a company running entirely on vibes — no central decision-making authority, no specs, no waterfall. Just collective momentum and improvisational theater. He argues this is what a “Golden Age” looks like inside an organization, and connects it to a deeper theory about when companies innovate fiercely vs. when politics take over.

  • Welcome to the Room by Jeffrey Snover – When Snover was promoted to Technical Fellow at Microsoft, Satya Nadella delivered the most concise leadership lesson he’d ever heard. The message: your days of whining are over. In this room, you manufacture success within constraints, you connect the dots from your headcount to results, and you generate clarity — not confusion. It’s a masterclass in executive accountability.

  • How Product Discovery Changes with AI by David Hoang – When AI can build almost anything quickly, the question changes from “Can we build this?” to “Should this exist?” David revisits the four classic product risks and finds that feasibility, viability, and usability have all gotten dramatically cheaper to address. The remaining one — desirability — becomes the differentiator. Product discovery is more important than ever, but the methods have to change.

  • State of the Designer 2026 | Figma – Figma surveyed 906 designers globally and found that 91% say AI tools improve their designs, 89% are working faster, and designers who lean into AI are 25% more likely to be satisfied at work. Craft isn’t going away — it’s becoming the differentiator.

  • How to Build AI Product Sense by Tal Raviv and Aman Khan – This isn’t a typical article — it’s an interactive experience built inside Cursor that demystifies AI concepts by having you learn them hands-on. The core insight: move past consumer-grade AI UIs and into coding agents to build real intuition for what’s feasible and impactful.

  • Product Design Is Changing by Roger Wong – AI is shifting design work from Figma mockups to design in code, centering orchestration, machine-readable design systems, and human judgment. Designers at companies like Anthropic are already making pull requests directly to production.

  • Don’t Outsource Your Thinking: The Discipline of AI-Native Leadership by Jhilmil Jain – A timely reminder that AI-native leadership isn’t about delegating everything to models. It’s about knowing where to apply judgment and where to let go.

  • Zero to One Is a Subtraction Problem by Casey Winters – Zero to one isn’t just about speed. It’s about surface area and conviction. Casey explores the tension between breadth and depth when building something new.

  • A Private Conversation Every Designer Needs to Hear by Tommy Geoco – A raw, honest conversation about what it really takes to navigate the design industry right now. Sometimes the best advice comes from someone who’s technically between roles.

  • First of Kind › Ryo Lu: The Way – Ryo Lu pioneered new patterns for collaboration as Notion’s founding designer. He now leads design at Cursor, shaping how software gets built through a fusion of design and engineering. In this conversation with Soleio, Ryo explains what design actually looks like inside Cursor, why the team is built around generalists and ex-founders, how agents and abstraction are changing the shape of the designer’s role, and whether AI distributes or concentrates creative power. Essential listening.

  • Tony Fadell Unfiltered on Apple, OpenAI & the Next Big Device | Newcomer Podcast – The father of the iPod goes deep on where the next major tech device comes from, why he calls Apple’s AI marketing “bullshit,” and why OpenAI’s strategy is to become too big to fail. A masterclass in product thinking from someone who’s shaped how people interact with technology.

  • Ben Blumenrose – The Library of Minds | Episode 16 – Facebook’s 5th designer shares the untold stories from the early design team, why he started Designer Fund when everyone thought it was crazy, and how he backed Stripe, Figma, Notion, and Linear before the world caught on. The bit about the 3% friendship cost of moving one button is unforgettable.

  • Executive Function: Build Systems That Can Decide Without You – Jeanne DeWitt Grosser, COO at Vercel and former Stripe leader, on how to build organizational systems that don’t require you in the room for every decision.

  • Ep12 UNReleased Podcast with Gjoko Muratovski – A conversation exploring design’s evolving role in business strategy and organizational transformation.

  • Stop Designing Screens. Start Designing Patterns. – A talk on why pattern-level thinking beats screen-level thinking in the age of AI-generated interfaces.
