Hi all —

Here’s your weekly dose of DX Perspective: what I’m noticing, saving, and thinking about as design (and leadership) gets rewired for an AI-native world. If something here makes you pause, forward it to a friend and tell them why.

  • What Matters When Anyone Can Build — We grew up being told the future belonged to those who could code—that vision mattered, but the real advantage was knowing how to bring it to life. That version of the future is fading, as the distance between imagination and reality has all but disappeared.

  • Rewiring software delivery for the agentic era — At 9:00 a.m., a product owner logs in to review overnight progress on a solution her team is working on. She sees that a feature has moved from structured requirements to tested code.

  • Design enters its frenemies era — It was the shock that the design world didn’t see coming, but should have. In mid-April, Anthropic, the maker of Claude, launched a stand-alone design tool called Claude Design.

  • Effective context engineering for AI agents — After a few years of prompt engineering being the focus of attention in applied AI, a new term has come to prominence: context engineering. Building with language models is becoming less about finding the right words and phrases for your prompts, and more about answering the broader question of “what configuration of context is most likely to generate our model’s desired behavior?”

  • Under the River - Shopify — It’s a strange time to be working in developer tools. Things we were doing six months ago don’t make sense anymore.

I built a new 1-day intensive around the question I keep hearing from senior leaders: my role is evolving faster than I can keep up with. What’s the plan?

This is that plan. One day, a personal playbook you build in real time, and the honest conversation most design leaders aren’t having yet — about what to own, what to let go of, and how to make yourself undeniable.

The flagship. Two weeks on building and leading a design organization at scale — strategy, influence, structure, and career. Designed from the ground up for Senior Directors, VPs, SVPs, and CDOs. Not retrofitted from general management. Built for you.
