Dear Reader,

It’s been a summer to remember — SDCC, Florida Supercon, Tiki drinks, matcha dates, Batman, Oasis, a Hello Kitty Baseball game, Palm Springs, my first drop on Guardians (would go again), Lorcana and a trip to Roku City!

My heart was so full after this years SDCC, I can not thank everyone who stopped past my table or came to my panel enough for their on going support. In a world of AI garbage it’s a relief to see so many folks come out and celebrate pop culture and creativity with us!

After SDCC I was lucky to line up a couple of rather fun freelance gigs, including a logo design for the Immortal Legend Batman series at DC Comics and some design work for Roku. I’ve got a little more on each of these below.

I’m also gearing up for NYCC this month, I’ll be releasing all my new pieces online in the coming weeks and after the show my online store will reopen with all of this years pieces.

For the last few weeks I’ve been moonlighting in Roku City, helping their talented design team on various projects, the first of which has just gone live on the screensaver. Roku City is celebrating the upcoming Emmy awards with some nods to this year’s nominees hidden throughout the city. Myself and the team worked to design elements that seamlessly blend into the cityscape.

No spoilers! I hope you can find them all…

Last month, I had the opportunity to craft a logo for the latest addition to the DC Comics Elseworlds line, Immortal Legend Batman. The Elseworlds line explores DC’s biggest names in alternative worlds and timelines and this six issue series combines sci-fi, westerns, Tokusatsu and of course, BATMAN!

I came onto the project later in the process, with finalised cover art in place. The logo needed to honour Dan Mora's energetic Tokusatsu inspired designs. Using a bold type treatment that works harmoniously with Dan's art, I looked to accentuate the themes that make this book unique, embracing both the origins of the narrative and the Tokusatsu aesthetic.

The logotype is a nod to both the Gothic origin of Batman and the bold Tokusatsu energy that the character designs and the world embrace. Batman holds a rich history, which was important to honour in the logo design, however, I felt that the traditional 'bat' inspired logo created too much of a visual obstacle with the detailed art. A subtle approach felt best.

The serif style font honours the Gothic origins of the narrative whilst the extended bold characters and slanted treatment lean into the Tokusatsu aesthetic. A balance of the two worlds colliding, and a bold new look for Batman in 2025.

A huge congratulations to the team, it's a book you won't want to miss!
