BOISE, Idaho — Zoo Boise is mourning the loss of 12-year-old snow leopard Sabu.
The zoo says Sabu was humanely euthanized after battling chronic kidney disease and other age-related conditions. Snow leopards live about 10-13 years in the wild on average, though some in captivity can live up to 22.
Zoo Boise says Sabu received increasingly specialized care as his chronic conditions progressed. His care included regular exams, weight monitoring, testing, medications, nutritional supplements, fluid therapy, and adjustments to his daily routine. The zoo says that level of care guided the “difficult decision” to euthanize Sabu when his quality of life could no longer be maintained.
Boise Parks and Recreation Director Sara Arkle says Sabu “holds a special place in the hearts” of staff, volunteers, and the community. “Sabu brought joy, wonder, and meaningful connections to countless people, and we will carry those memories with us for years to come,” Arkle said.
Sabu has been with Zoo Boise since 2020 when he was six years old. Zoo Boise says Sabu helped inspire guests to learn more about snow leopards and the challenges they face. Snow leopards are classified as vulnerable in the wild, after being downgraded from endangered in 2017.
The zoo invites guests who would like to remember Sabu to leave cards, notes, or memories on a memorial board near the snow leopard habitat.
