The Cage They Never Called a Cage

The alarm goes off.

And before you remember your name, before the to-do list assembles itself, before you reach for the phone…

there it is.

That feeling.

Quiet. Heavy. Sitting right in the center of your chest like it never left.

You lie there for just a moment in the space between sleep and the day and something in you knows.

This isn’t quite right.

Then you get up anyway. You make the coffee. You put on the face. You step back inside the machine.

Nobody handed you a cage and called it a cage.

They handed you a schedule. A salary. A role. A ring. A definition of a good woman that was already written before you arrived.

They handed you a life already assembled. Neat. Acceptable. Achievable.

Here is what success looks like. Here is what love looks like. Here is what a woman like you is supposed to want.

And you were young and you were trying and you didn’t yet know that you could question the blueprint.

So you stepped inside.

You optimized yourself for a world that was never built for your soul.

You got good at it. God, you got so good at it.

The performance. The productivity. The pleasing. The shrinking just enough to fit through every door they decided was right for you.

You called it living.

It looked like living.

From the outside it looked exactly like living.

For a long time it worked.

The busyness kept you from the quiet. The next goal kept you from the question. The wine, the scroll, the weekend plans, being needed, being wanted, being everything to everyone…

it all worked.

The noise was loud enough to drown her out.

That part of you. The one who knew. This isn’t how it should feel.

But then something shifted.

You can’t quite name when. There was no dramatic moment, no single second everything changed…

it was slower than that. Quieter.

Like a tide going out.

The relationship that used to feel like home started feeling like jeans three sizes too small.

The job that used to give you purpose started feeling like a sentence.

The routine that used to feel like safety started feeling like walls closing in.

The things that were supposed to comfort you stopped working.

And no matter how many times you rearranged them, dressed them up, told yourself to be grateful…

the feeling was still there.

Waiting. Patient as stone.

The hardest part isn’t the waking up.

It’s looking around and realizing no one else seems to feel it.

The people in your life are still inside the machine and it appears to be working perfectly fine for them.

They are making plans. Hitting goals. Posting the highlights. Celebrating the very things that have started to feel like sand in your mouth.

And you smile. You show up. You say the right things.

But inside you are somewhere else entirely.

You try to explain it once. Maybe twice.

The words come out wrong or they land wrong or the look on their face tells you before they even speak…

they don’t feel it.

So you go silent.

You stop trying to name it. You start carrying it alone… this strange, heavy knowing that something is ending even though nothing has officially fallen apart.

You start to wonder if something is wrong with you.

If you are unappreciative. Unstable. Too much. Not enough.

You are not the problem.

You were never the problem.

You were just the first one in your world to wake up.

And that is the loneliest place a woman can stand.

And then.

Something falls.

Maybe it’s the job. The email arrives, the meeting happens, the thing you built your security around suddenly isn’t there anymore.

Maybe it’s the relationship. A conversation that cannot be untaken. A truth that once spoken changes the entire shape of the room.

Maybe it’s your body. Stopping you. Forcing you horizontal when you have spent years being relentlessly vertical.

Maybe it’s quieter than that. A moment alone in the car in a grocery store parking lot…

and you start crying and you cannot stop and you don’t even know exactly why.

Something falls.

And here is what no one tells you about the falling…

you survive it.

Not only that.

You look down at the rubble of the thing you thought was holding you and you realize with a shock that moves through your whole body…

it was never holding you.

You were holding it.

You were holding it together with both hands for years.

The job that was slowly extinguishing your fire. The relationship that required you to set aside who you really are. The version of yourself you performed so convincingly that even you forgot it was a performance.

You were gripping it so tightly.

And now it’s gone.

And you are still here.

Shaking. Uncertain. Without ground.

And more yourself than you have felt in years.

This is not punishment.

This is the force that loves you too much to let you stay comfortable in a life too small for your soul.

The tower doesn’t fall on you.

It falls for you.

You are not broken.

Let that land.

You are not too sensitive. You are not a failure. You are not difficult or dramatic or lost.

You are awake.

Feeling the first unbearable edges of a truth your soul has been trying to tell you for longer than you know.

The life didn’t stop fitting because something is wrong with you.

It stopped fitting because you grew.

Because something ancient and electric and completely your own has been pressing against the ceiling of everything they told you to be…

and it is done being contained.

You don’t know where you are going yet.

That’s okay.

You don’t need the destination. You don’t need the plan. You don’t need anyone around you to understand it or validate it or give you permission.

You only need this…

the willingness to feel the cage and stop pretending it’s a home.

That feeling in your chest on that ordinary morning when the alarm goes off and something in you knows?

That is not despair.

That is your soul speaking.

You don’t know where you are going.

You only know you cannot stay.

And that…

that right there…

is faith.

Welcome to the beginning of your true story.
