Why I Love Two Middle-Aged Chicks Dancing on the Internet

Do you know Your Chill Tias? Until a few months ago, neither did I. And now I’m not sure how I can live without them. They are Tammi Cubilette and Sonia Gonzalez, a coupla Latinas of a certain #GenX age in New York City making short videos on social media. Most of the time, they’re grooving and lip synching to disco, funk, hip-hop, R&B, or whatever else turns them on. Sometimes in costume, other times sporting vintage or girl-power t-shirts, the duo has the most excellent taste in shades, the funky kind that you might buy from a street vendor.

Shot in what looks like somebody’s living room, the videos are about a minute long, appearing on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube a few times a week. And they are pure dopamine: A perfect bite of hijinks, sass, and a certain I-don’t-give-a-fuck-ness that only comes with age.

I could list the many reasons why I love the Tias, not the least of which is that these gurls still know how to cut a rug. But the thing I love most of all is what lies beneath the surface, the delight of dancing your pants off — that art is resistance, and the Tias are reminding us, as bad as things are right now, we gotta keep busting a move.

Is there a woman/womyn you love that we should know about? Please share in the comments! I hope you’re finding some ease in your days, even for just sixty seconds. — xokod
