The Seed Inside The Tree (Pt. 4)

Dear Reader, this is the final part in a series I’ve been doing reflecting on the phenomenon of soil. These are written in quite a stream of consciousness way and it will help to refer back to Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 to get the full picture and context for the music I’ll be sharing today!

Rudolf Steiner wrote a book called “How to Know Higher Worlds” which I read for the first time in 2024. In it he explains an exercise of concentration that can be used to wake us up to the potential gift in every living thing by concentrating on a seed for an extended amount of time. Steiner instructs the student to hold a seed in their hand, contemplate it fully as it is, and then inwardly perceive the invisible plant it contains—the whole future form held as potential within the tiny object. One does not just pay attention to the seed itself but actively contemplates that within this seed lies the entire tree.

It requires both deep imagination and attention to an invisible reality, asking us to draw on what he often calls ‘dormant faculties.’

This relates back to Teilhard and his vision of Christ being latent within the very fabric of creation. He suggests every atom is destined to eventually play out the resurrection story in its own way. If this inner Christ consciousness or Buddha nature—the seed of awakening already present in everyone—is actually etched into our very being, is the little seed not only sacrificing its previous body when it becomes a plant but also entering into an intimate relationship with the sun when it finally responds?

I wonder how it knows to trust that voice?

Now I’m thinking about the wild geese navigating by magnetic fields, star maps and infrasound—frequencies so low that they’re inaudible to human ears—reading a map of the world we can’t access which guides their grand pilgrimage across the sky. These routes appear to be encoded into their bodies before they were even born.

There are processes at play that are so much greater than us and yet they invite us and even require us to participate, if they are to reach their full bloom. Even if it’s just for a minimum of 11 seconds in a songwriting challenge with Jacob Collier. I’m getting good at the callback, right?

But, the point is, you never know what will grow…
