how to work together a selvedge

sunlight with an ache

i let dappled light meet my skin in the space between trees
watch as day draws shadow-line tattoos across new wrinkles
swaying with imperfect rhythm, beholden to no pattern
light grows quieter

i study glimmers on the water, how they never still
learning to linger like flickers in the night
holding hands with susurrous lullabies
a reassurance of motility-
i’m still breathing • heart beating • mind weaving

i wonder how to work together a selvedge
strong enough to keep me from unraveling
pliable enough to let me stretch, bend without breaking
brave enough to let. me. grow.

i listen for the velvet hush i crave, falling over everywhere
reaching out to find purchase on even the smallest crevice
enough to grasp an inkling of ‘maybe’
a whispered change
