Right. So. If you’ve been with me since the beginning, you know I write under different names for different genres. Right now, the two active names are Kieran Scott for adult mystery thrillers and Emma Harrison for YA romance. Recently, these two worlds collided when I had my new adult thriller, THE GETAWAY, hit Amazon’s First Reads the very same week my new, cozy YA romance, FALLING INTO YOU, went on sale.
Also, I was on vacation that week. That is not relevant to this story except it was a little…frazzling? But I digress.
First, I had already started posting about FALLING INTO YOU to try to inspire some pre-orders. Since I wasn’t yet allowed to tell anyone about First Reads, this was fine. But then August 1, hit and it was full-on promotion time for THE GETAWAY. I immediately posted the details about how to download the free ebook and everyone who had started following my page for the YA romances was scratching their heads.
It was, shall we say, not ideal. People in this industry are always talking about their brand and how important it is to not confuse your brand. But also important? Making a living.
I have been so blessed to have had a long career doing what I love. I have been paid everything from four figures to six figures to write a book. My career has gone through very high highs and very low lows. Right now, I’m happy to say I’m writing only things I love and working with people I adore. But right now, that also means taking on lots of projects at low advances until—hopefully—something hits.
The grind, she is not easy. And she is definitely not straight-forward. But I felt heartened when one new follower messaged me saying she was downloading THE GETAWAY for herself and buying FALLING INTO YOU for her daughter. That’s what it’s all about, right there! It’s a wild ride, but I’m glad you (and maybe your kids) are on it with me!
