Every day, we have the opportunity to support families in ways that go far beyond therapy sessions. We help them make decisions about the best financial options for caring for their kiddo in the long term. We helping them investigate options for transporting their kiddo, with all of the necessary equipment, to the many doctor’s appointments that fill their schedules. We help them evaluate the various pieces of medical equipment—from orthotics to beds and everything in between—that might help their kiddo be more comfortable and more engaged in the world around them. Other times we help them explore options for summer camps, community programs, and resources that best support their kiddo’s developmental needs.

The job of a home health OT, PT, or ST goes far beyond setting goals and celebrating milestones. We are welcomed into families’ homes week after week, and over time we become a small part of their lives. As relationships grow, the conversations naturally extend beyond teaching a new skill or expanding vocabulary. We talk about worries, victories, frustrations, and hopes for the future.

These families are fighting battles that most of us will never fully understand. Many are doing so on little sleep and under a constant cloud of worry. Every day we meet parents who are learning as they go, making enormous changes for their families in order to support one child, all while adapting to a new version of normal and grieving the loss what they thought life would be like. Many are balancing the needs of a child with complex medical or developmental challenges while also trying to be fully present for siblings and the rest of their family.

We never take for granted the special relationships that grow along the way. It is a privilege to be invited into these homes and trusted during some of the most challenging seasons of a family’s life.

At the same time, we know that our role is temporary. Eventually we will walk out the door for the last time, hoping that in the time we shared we offered something meaningful—support, guidance, reassurance, or simply a listening ear. Our greatest hope is that families feel stronger, more confident, and more prepared for whatever comes next.

Because while therapy may focus on milestones, the real work is helping families believe they can keep moving forward long after we are gone.
