What’s Wrong With the Price of Everything

(And why the number on your screen and the number on your receipt live in two different countries)

The Bureau of Labor Statistics wants you to believe inflation is 3.4%. Core CPI, 2.5%. Both numbers came in exactly where Wall Street expected. Nice and tame. Nothing to see here, folks.

So why does your grocery bill feel like a home invasion?

I’m not asking that rhetorically. I’m asking it as a recovering attorney who spent a career reading fine print for a living. Because when the official number and your lived experience diverge this hard, one of two things is true: either you’re losing your mind, or the number is lying to you.

Spoiler: it’s not you.

The Magic Trick Hiding Inside “3.4%”

Here’s what they don’t put in the press release. CPI doesn’t measure what a gallon of milk cost last year versus this year. It measures a *substituted basket* — if steak gets too expensive, the model quietly swaps in chicken and calls that “consumer behavior,” not inflation. It’s hedonic adjustment for your new car, “quality improvements” smoothing away sticker shock, and owner’s equivalent rent — a number that doesn’t even measure what anyone actually pays, it estimates what you’d theoretically charge yourself to live in your own house.

That’s not a price index. That’s a magic trick with a government seal on it.

Meanwhile, gold — the asset with zero PR department, zero spin room, and zero incentive to make anyone feel better — just traded above **$4,400 an ounce**. After cratering nearly 30% off its January highs, it’s clawing back toward record territory again. Gold doesn’t read press releases. Gold reads the currency it’s priced in. And right now it’s telling you the dollar in your pocket is worth less than the headline wants you to believe.

The Trump Variable

Here’s where my FSN framework comes in, and it’s the same one I’ve used since studying his deals back to the Commodore Hotel in 1976 — fifty years of watching how this man actually operates versus what he says on camera.

Rule one: ignore the statements. Watch the actions. Trump has AI-powered negotiating leverage no president in history has had — real-time modeling of tariff impacts, rate decisions, energy markets, all of it. When gold spikes on “Iran situation worsens” headlines and cools on “low-keying it” statements, that’s not chaos. That’s a very specific kind of choreography. Sun Tzu didn’t write “The Art of the Press Conference.” He wrote about controlling the terrain before the other side knows there’s a battle.

The labor market is cracking — a real job *loss* in July, not just a slowdown. The Fed is boxed in between a soft jobs number screaming “cut rates” and a stubborn core inflation number screaming “don’t you dare.” That tension is exactly the kind of macro fault line that decides who protects their purchasing power over the next 12 months and who gets quietly strip-mined by a number the government insists is “tame.”

This Is the Whole Ballgame

I’ve done over 10,000 interviews across 15+ years running the Financial Survival Network. I’ve watched every flavor of “expert” call every flavor of top and bottom. The ones who actually protected their money weren’t the loudest. They were the ones who had the analytical framework *before* the headline broke — not after.

That’s the entire premise behind **Insider Advantage**.

Free readers get the headline. Insider Advantage readers get the framework underneath it — the gold and silver positioning calls, the geopolitical read-throughs (we called the Hormuz head fake, the Venezuelan capture, the Kurdish northern front thesis, and Iran as a distressed M&A situation — all on the record, all before they broke), and the plain-English translation of what the Fed, the CPI print, and the next Trump move actually mean for your money.

The price of everything is broken. That much everyone can see. The question is whether you’re reading the number they hand you, or the one that’s actually true.

**Get the framework before the headline breaks.**
