KevToon · KevToon’s Substack

I’ve been a lifelong comic book fan. I love comic books. I love reading them, studying them and collecting them. I love the art form of comics. I love the creativity of comics. I simply love what they are. I even worked in comic shops for a few years and loved every bit of it (the smell of fresh comics still makes me happy).

One thing that has been consistent throughout all of that has been the desire to make my own comics. I have always been a creative person. I was the kid in class who could draw and was always top of the art class. So it was only natural that I would want to make comics for a living. But that is not currently the case.

The job I have now has nothing to do with comics, or any kind of creativity, at all. It pays the bills. That’s it. Sure, I did make comics for a major newspaper for a few years, and have hundreds of pages to show for it, but those weren’t MY comics.

Which brings me to the point of this Substack. MY comics. I have this need to make comics. It has always been there and, no matter what happens in my life, it never changes. So this KevToon substack will be a place for me to share my comics journey as a fan and as a creator. I will share what I am working on, how I’ve been developing my ideas, what has changed, what I have tried and what has failed. I would also like to share what has inspired me, what comics I enjoy and what I am currently reading.

I am a very visual person (my comic ‘writing’ is sketches and thumbnails, not wordy scripts) so I’m not entirely sure what I will be writing on these pages. It may just be a bunch of waffle with a few images, but whatever it is I will try to be as authentic and honest as possible.

And the goal with all of this? Figuring out what has kept me from truly pursuing my dreams, finding my creative confidence again, and, as the journey continues, making comics my full-time job!

Kev :)
