Heads. I draw a lot of heads. Every time I sketch or doodle I draw characters heads. I’m always looking for something unique, something to stand out, a character’s ‘character’.
I can’t move on to the next phase of designing the character, which is the body of course, until I am completely satisfied with the head. I need something to be there, a personality to shine through, something to tell me who this character is. Not only through the obvious (the character expressing themselves) but also in their neutral state.
I usually have an idea of what I want which, more often than not, is a ‘feeling’ of who the character is. I need to sense who they are first and then I search for them through dozens and dozens of sketches and doodles. Some characters show up within a few sketches while others take many pages of drawing to find.
It can be a long process sometimes but it’s always fun.
Kev :)
