I Stopped Chasing Virality. Here’s What Actually Grew My Income

Kevin Szabo · The Writing Chronicles

I used to refresh my notifications every 10 minutes.

A post would hit 50k impressions and I felt unstoppable.

The next 20 would flop and I beat myself up.

My mood and progress were tied to numbers I could not control.

I believed if I got big enough, the money would follow.

More reach. More opportunity. More clients. Freedom.

That belief was wrong.

What grew my income had almost nothing to do with going viral.

Here’s The Shift

I stopped asking, “How do I make this post blow up?”

I started asking, “How do I make this post move the right person one step closer to working with me?”

That change rewired everything.

Virality is a spike.

Income is a system.

A viral post creates temporary attention. Most of it is passive. People like, save, and leave. The conversion rate from pure reach to paid clients stays low without a process underneath it.

What compounded was different:

•  Consistent writing that attracted a specific type of reader

•  Clear positioning so the right people self-selected

•  Simple ways to turn readers into conversations

•  An offer that solved a painful problem

•  A closing process that did not rely on hope

None of that requires a post to hit 100k impressions. Most of my highest-converting content never did.

What made the move

The content that grew my income was rarely my most popular content.

It was the posts that made the right person feel understood. The ones that named a specific frustration they already felt. The ones that showed I had solved the exact problem they were stuck on.

Those posts did not always go wide.

They went deep.

They attracted fewer people, but those people were warmer and more ready to buy.

I noticed a clear pattern.

Posts that generated the most client conversations usually performed average by vanity metrics. Solid engagement from the right audience. No fireworks.

Some of my biggest viral moments produced almost zero business. Noise without signal.

That was the turning point.

I stopped measuring success by how many people saw the post.

I started measuring it by how many meaningful conversations it started.

The Real Engine

I rebuilt around five principles:

1.  Write for the decision-maker, not the crowd.
Every post aims at people who already have the problem I solve.

2.  Make the next step obvious.
Clear invitations. Specific language. Easy for the right person to raise their hand.

3.  Treat content as lead generation.
The goal is not to impress. The goal is to be precise enough that the right people feel the post was written for them.

4.  Keep the offer aligned with the content.
If the content and the offer solve different problems, the system breaks.

5.  Get excellent at the conversation after the post.
Most creators obsess over the content and ignore the part that makes money: the follow-up and the close.

Content does not close the sale.

It starts the right conversation.

This is where the free portion ends.

The rest of this post is for paid subscribers. Inside you get the full system:

•  The three post types that consistently generate client conversations

•  How I structure content to filter for high-intent readers

•  The positioning shift that started attracting people ready to pay

•  A weekly content rhythm built for income, not dopamine

•  The metrics I track now and the ones I ignore

This is the same approach that moved me from chasing likes to building consistent client flow and product income.
