Kevin Black · Meditations from the War Room

We all know and celebrate the athletes who show endurance throughout the game. From start to finish, they are reliable and serve their roles nearly perfectly. The same may even reach the respect and awe of being called GOAT.

What about the athletes who start strong but don’t have the stamina to finish strong? They give, as many coaches ask, 110%. They put all their effort into the beginning and maybe deal with burnout in the latter part of the game. (I’m thinking of Syracuse Basketball teams of my youth.

)

Then there are the athletes who take so much time to find their game. They are present initially but don’t make enough noise to be noticed. Maybe they consider themselves to be benchwarmers. But then, in the last half or even last quarter, they turn it on, make crucial plays, and may even score the winning point.

Who of these two is most valuable? The opener or the closer? I’m not talking about pitchers who serve these rolls. The athletes in question play the whole game in different capacities.

So, who is of more value?
