A big welcome to those of you who have found your way here through The Doodle Summit. I am honored to speak alongside veterinarians and behaviorists who I respect, like Dr. Adam Christman, Zazie Todd, and Jean Donaldson. My free session is tomorrow and in case you missed any of the live sessions, you can access everything here. Yes, it is a Doodle Summit, but most of the teachings are applicable to all dogs, including my session on resilience.
A few more days until I can share some really exciting news about Puppy Brain! Two years later and it continues to surprise me. I’ll share it here first, so stay tuned.
SOMETHING TO LEARN
Dreaded Dental Disease: If your dog is more than 3-years-old, they likely have periodontal disease.
One of the most surprising things I learned in our recent podcast with senior dog specialist Dr. Monica Tarantino is that dogs should get a yearly anesthetized dental cleaning. How have I never heard this? I was shocked when Dr. Monica said it, but then it made perfect sense when she compared dogs to humans. Why do we get our teeth professionally cleaned? Because despite the best flossing and brushing routine, tartar and plaque buildup occurs below the gum line and can only be removed by a hygienist.
The same is true for our dogs.
Two more things to remember. First, the American Veterinary Dental College “does not recommend dental cleanings without anesthesia because they do not allow cleaning or inspection below the gum line, where most dental disease occurs.” Second, there is no better way to care for a dog’s teeth than at-home brushing (use VOHC approved products like this toothpaste, and finger brushes are great).
SOMETHING TO WATCH
My son Max is home for the summer and as a result, I am watching a much more diverse range of movies and TV shows than would be typical for me. Had he not bought the tickets and told me I had no choice but to go, I may have missed what is now one of my all-time favorite movies.
The Odyssey. In IMAX. This is very simple: go. The casting, the acting, the story interpretation, the cinematography, the visceral experience. All of it! I walked out of the theater and would have walked right back in to watch it again.
Also, the dog.
As for television series, I must first address my previous endorsement of Your Friends and Neighbors and say that, on the whole, the second season paled in comparison to the first. I nearly stopped watching, as it was such a disappointment, but hung in there with the hope that there would be some redemption (there was). What did all of you think?
But I can resoundingly endorse Legends on Netflix — the true story of ordinary British customs employees who were sent undercover to infiltrate the country’s most dangerous drug gangs in the early 1990s. We marveled that it was based on true events, as it seemed so outlandishly improbable.
And last, I Will Find You. Aside from the fact that a Nicholberry dad was one of the producers (it was fun to watch his Instagram stories as they traveled around the U.S. and Canada filming), it was just so good. If you haven’t watched it yet, ready yourself for a compelling story and a serious plot twist.
