It happens all the time at airports, train terminals, and bus stops. The awaited plane, train, or bus arrives and spews out the passengers.
You are giddy with anticipation, eagerly waiting for a loved one. You haven’t seen them in months, and you have missed them terribly.
You scan around and spot them sauntering towards the exit. You want to make your reunion memorable -add a little pizazz.
So you sneak in their direction, stealthily, careful not to blow your cover. You manage to get behind them and cover their eyes with your hands.
They wiggle out of your grip, and you come face to face with them… “Surprise!” you holler at a bewildered stranger.
You can’t believe your eyes… You “surprised” (more like shocked) the wrong person, and they are not amused.
They bellow at you long enough to let you know they don’t fancy physical contact with strangers.
Meanwhile, your “real” loved one is chortling away at a distance, having witnessed your case of mistaken identity.
“Am so sorry!” You quip, completely mortified.
Turns out your gaze had been on the wrong person all along.
King David knew that it was possible to go about life with your gaze on the wrong things.
It was possible to saunter around in life with warped priorities. So he made a prayer:
“Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way” (Psalm 119:37).
He didn’t want his priorities all jumbled up. He desired that His gaze and affection would be on God above all else.
He was aware that his flesh was unruly and that it gravitated towards vain things. So he asked God to deflect his eyes from earthly pleasures and instead fix them on Him.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
(Mark 8:36)
Even now, God wants this kind of resolve from you and me.
He wants us to seek fellowship with Him above everything else that demands our time and attention.
What keeps you from seeking His first? What dulls your appetite for His Kingdom?
Is your gaze on the cares of life, busyness, comfort, entertainment, or relationships?
What or who gets your deepest affection? Are your hands encircled around the eyes of a complete stranger?
Like David, ask God to deflect your eyes from vain things and revive you in His ways.
I have some exciting news, dear reader.
God put it in my heart to write a book for wives and wives-to-be. The book is titled “Mistakes Wives Make in Marriage and How to Remedy Them.
When I initially sensed the nudge from the Holy Spirit to write on this subject, I disqualified myself on so many fronts.
What’s more? It didn’t help that I am as introverted as they come. I love me a private, closed-in life, but I felt God nudging me to get vulnerable and share the lessons He has snuggled into my heart over the years.
I surrendered and chose obedience.
I didn’t craft this book from a pedestal of perfection - far from it. I took my own experiences, the challenges I have muddled through in my own marriage, and held them up against the infallible word of God.
This book was born from lots of prayer, studying the scriptures, conversations with fellow women, and oodles of research.
And here’s a very honest disclaimer- none of the lessons tucked in the book is AI-generated. None. Nada.
Each of them is straight from my heart and rooted in scripture.
