Over the last three videos, I have been talking about the seismic shift taking place in American education. I began with the story of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, where a massive earthquake so altered the landscape that the old maps were no longer reliable.
And I think it’s a fitting image for what is happening right now in education. The old maps are failing. Parents know it. Students feel it. The establishment is certainly worried about it. And families who are paying attention are beginning to ask better questions.
In the first video, I talked about why this matters. The educational landscape has changed. Public trust has eroded. Families are leaving conventional systems. Parent-choice scholarships, homeschooling, hybrid models, classical schools, and online courses are completely reshaping the terrain.
But underneath all of that is something deeper. Parents are realizing that education is the formation of a human being, not the preparation of their child for a fluctuating job market. It is the passing down of wisdom and knowledge from one generation to the next. It is where every culture tells the truth about what it believes and what it loves.
In the second video, I talked about the compass questions. What is education for? What kind of person is this education forming? What environment is best for my child? What is the curriculum? Who is teaching and forming my child? Does this education cultivate virtue and wisdom? Does it teach my child to master words rather than be mastered by them?
In the third video, I talked about how to give your child a humane education in a real family with real limits. Begin with the end in mind. Choose an environment appropriate to your season. Build an ordered course of study. Make room for the liberal arts. Find teachers and mentors who love the right things. Build a sustainable plan.
