In Sickness

Hello. I need help. I am suffering from severe depression. It has been eight years - since 2018 - when I started to feel this way. I don't know. Everybody is asking for a trigger but I don't know what that is, what that specific event was. All I know is that I am suffering right now. Childhood? Perfectly fine. A bit isolated from my peers, but it did not bother me so much. I love reading books…

Hypocrisy

it is not just a painting of two men sitting across a table one, red faced and spitting venom, and casually pouring tea, the other, stoic, but hands banging on the table, almost shaking the cup of tea being poured by the other no it is not just a painting it is the embodiment of spiders weaving webs of paint across different timelines and saying "uh, this is okay"

On Tradition

I never use "Dear" when sending someone an email. I know using "Dear" is stemmed from tradition at this point but it always feels too personal for me. I think it's because I associate "dear" with "beloved". When sending someone an email, I try to use "Hi, XYZ" when it calls for a slightly informal tone, and just skip salutations altogether and say "Sir XYZ" or "Ma'am XYZ" followed by a colon when…

On Letters to Myself II

Hi, K. How are you? Today is a good mental health day for you even if it's a Monday. That's rare. Does that mean your meds are working? You hope so. It has been a terrible July and August. You keep thinking about that Hyperbole and a Half comic about depression . You want everybody to read the web comic because frankly, it's the best description of what depression is. It's not a bad case of…

On Letter to Myself

Hi, K. Have you ever wondered why you refer to yourself as K, and not Ken or Kenneth? Do you hate your name? Introspection tells us that we don't, but there's a certain quality to being referred to by the first letter of your name. It's special, like you are the only "K" in the world. You always wanted to be called K, but there's always another K, or Kaye, or Kei already in the office when you…

On Anxiety

One of the best saying I've applied in my life is this, often attributed to the Dalai Lama: If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it's not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever. I always repeat this quote whenever I get anxious. As an example: I am deadly afraid of…

On Writing

I don’t care if I get published, or be known, or even be a good writer. I just want to finish and accomplish something. Ever since I was a kid, I always knew I wanted to be a writer. My brothers, who I look up to (even today), have this huge shelf of books in our shared bedroom. As an introvert even since then, I never had any friends in the neighborhood. My friends were my brothers and the books.…

On My EDC Kit

I am into everyday carry or EDC. My fascination with the hobby came when I went to the mall and found myself wanting to poop real bad. It should be noted that public bathrooms in the Philippines usually do not have bidets or worse, no tissue paper. You have to bring your own or buy one of those rickety one ply ones from coin-op dispensers. That day, I found a bathroom with no bidet, no tissue…
