Heavy equipment has arrived and was moved into key positions during the last half of June to begin the replenishment of sand on Venice Beach. A large pumping ship was anchored off Golden Beach and a pair of barges loaded with a huge crane and other heavy gear were in place on the lip of the North Jetty. Construction operations will roll along the beach in 1,000 to 1,500-foot sections, resulting in short-term closures (typically 5 to 7 days per section) as work progresses. The project is actively underway and is scheduled to be completed by September.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) began this $27 million Hurricane and Storm Damage Reduction Project to restore 3.2 miles of critically eroded shoreline in Venice, Florida. The project will move 700,000 cubic yards of sand from the Gulf to the beach to act as a buffer against coastal erosion and storm surge.
Saturday, July 11th: The episcopal ordination and installation of Bishop-elect Emilio Biosca Agüero as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Venice will be held at St. John XXIII Parish in Fort Myers, Florida. The ordination and installation mark a transition for the 10-county Catholic diocese as Bishop Frank J. Dewane retires after 20 years of service.
