Another Tentative TBR

For me, a TBR, or To Be Read list, is always going to be tentative. I do not think too many people actually read their TBR’s in order (the self-control! the determination! I admire these people) but I am definitely not one of them.

As a Mood Reader™, my TBR will always be tentative. I am sincerely interested in reading the books, and I will read them! Either next week or in five years. Sometimes I start one and get in the mood for something else and then pick it up a year later and read it in a day.

If you’re a Mood Reader™ and want to know how to stop this, don’t ask me. I have never found the answer. But I have allowed myself to read as I want to, and that helps me to be consistent in my inconsistency. At the very least, when I allow my Mood Reader-ness to lead, I do end up still reading, instead of stalling or trying to force myself through a book I am just not feeling at the moment.

To read at all, in my opinion, is the most important bit.

Hopkins work academically has centered around permaculture and the ecosystem, and in this book he explores the way we can use our imaginations to build a better future. He explores the way imagination has historically helped in the past and some of the neuroscience involved, and over-all it just seems like an interesting read and I may pick this up sooner than later.

In my rare ventures into horror, I’ve discovered that I need a very specific premise to entice me to read a horror, and apparently an angel being discovered by WWI soldiers in the middle of a mission is a premise that I find too intriguing to pass up. I will definitely have to be in a ‘mood’ to read this one though, because between the supernatural element and WWI setting, the prose has been described as ‘visceral’.

I love a well-written historical non-fiction. I’ve always been interested in history, and there are an amazing number of historical non-fiction books about shipwrecks (which is why there are more than one on my TBR, but I’m only listing one here). Part of my interest is the mention of Samuel Pepys, the well-known diarist from that time period. I have actually read some of his diary entries before as part of a college class and remember being intrigued by his ability to describe the world around him. I do want to add more non-fiction to my reading this year, so maybe I’ll move this up.

This is one of those books that I already know I would be thrilled with and will probably hit all of my fantasy buttons, not to mention that I have consistently heard good things about John Gwynne books in general. While a little bit darker than my usual fantasy, I’m excited to venture into this world — when I get to it.

Similar to how I read horror, I also need to be intrigued by a particular premise when it comes to thrillers. This one is about a wildlife biologist who is trying help wolverines, a threatened species, while also surviving attempts to stop her work and her life. Her expertise on the wilderness and the animals ends being key to her survival. I always like a book with a smart protagonist who can use their everyday skills to survive an extreme event. It’s just fun to read.

Umberto Eco was an Italian novelist with a host of academic credentials who wrote novels, children’s books, and articles until he passed in 2016. The Name of the Rose is about Brother William, a Franciscan in the 1327, investigating the brothers in an abbey for heresy when a series of murders raises the stakes. I do enjoy an historical mystery, and Umberto Eco is the kind of writer that intrigues me, using language, history, theology, and philosophy as themes in his novels, giving the mystery the kind of intellectual edge that always fascinates me.

While my actual TBR list is nearly a thousand books long (I really have to go through it, I’m sure there’s some I can off-load) this is just an abbreviated list of potential soon-to-be-read books that intrigue me.
