Unexpectedly, at the end of the month, temperatures dropped below 50 degrees F overnight! I didn't want to lose my cucumbers so I used a window box planter covered in remay to protect them. I wanted to cover as many warm-weather veggies as possible, so cantaloupe and lunchbox peppers got tucked in with remay for a couple nights as well. In June of last year, I noticed a small, bristly plant growing towards the back of my garden plot. I couldn't tell what it was. I thought it felt a little bit like borage, so I left it to grow. I took this photo in the middle of May, 2026. I'm thrilled by how much ground cover has already appeared! It seems my efforts at spreading clover everywhere are paying off. I waited as long as I could to start cleaning the garden. I didn't trim anything back last fall, so there was lots of dead growth to chop off (including an 8' tall mammoth sunflower! ). My first year with a garden exceeded my expectations in every possible way. By this point I had completely fallen in love with the hobby. The colors, the smells, the small changes each time I visit the plot... I truly wish I could spend every day here.
