The American Civil War of 1861-65 was the first industrial war with iron clad battleships submarines and machine guns like the Gatling Gun along with sea mines and many other wartime innovations as war always drives invention and ingenuity as did the later Great War in Europe with poison gas, aeroplanes and more deadly machine guns like the Maxim machine gun, the Lewis Gun and the Mauser rifle and pistol. The American Civil War was between the slave owning Confederate South and the Union North led by great American President the assassinated Abraham Lincoln who delivered the Gettysburg Address on the eve of the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg in 1865 which was the final hammer blow for The Confederacy. Abraham Lincoln was commemorated in a Hollywood film 🎥 by Oscar winning director Steven Spielberg 👏. The American Civil War was the first war to be chronicled in photographs with many harrowing battlefield photographs being published which haunt us even today over 160 years later. In excess of 600,000 Americans perished in the American Civil War but the free North by winning the war for freedom ensured that slavery would not be enshrined in the American Constitution Keith Bracey Birmingham Historian http://keithbracey.wordpress.com
