I can’t remember where I bought this vintage smock shirt but for years, it’s been one of my go-to “work uniforms.” The large pockets, loose fit, lightweight cotton, the fun and colorful pattern — all perfect for a day of creativity.

I used to wear a lot of vintage smocks and apron tops when I was in my 20s and sewing full-time. I kind of loved the idea of having a uniform that was comfortable but made me feel cute and ready for work. Being that I work from home, I get trapped in a rut if I don’t fully dress for a day of work. I say that now, as I’m writing this after 24 hours of travel and currently writing this in actual pajamas…wondering why I’m not in bed. Pajamas signal “relax” to me, which affects my concentration. And then, conversely, affects my ability to fully relax once I’m in bed. I can always tell when I’ve been working from bed or in pajamas or a robe too often, because I am always exhausted. It confuses my body and my mind. Is that just me?

Smock tops, vintage house dresses, and things like 70s hostess outfits (a bit more polished leisurewear!) are a good balance for me, as well as modern matching cotton or linen sets. But I also love making my own little tent dresses for maximum comfort. Maybe that should be another pattern release?
