THE MEASUREMENT THAT CONTROLS EVERYTHING IN YOUR BODICE DRAFT

I’m currently drafting for one of my beta testing clients and I had to stop.

Not because something went wrong exactly. But because something didn’t add up, and in pattern drafting, when something doesn’t add up, you stop and figure out why before you go any further.

Here’s what happened and what it taught me.

I was drafting the back bodice using the Chris Sartorial system.

When I measured the back armhole length, it came out at 10 inches.

Something felt off. My own formula was giving me 8 inches for the same body. That’s a 2 inch difference, too large to ignore.

In pattern drafting, a 2 inch discrepancy isn’t a rounding error. It’s a signal.

So I stopped and started working backwards.

In the Chris Sartorial system, there’s one measurement that does more work than any other:

The apex point measured UP from the waist to the fullest part of the bust.

Most people focus on bust circumference, waist circumference, shoulder width. These are the obvious measurements, the ones every pattern asks for.

But the apex from waist? Most patterns never ask for it at all.

And yet it controls everything.

Here’s why:

In the Chris Sartorial system, the apex from waist determines the bust level line. That bust level line becomes the armhole level for the back bodice.

Which means:

  • If your apex from waist is too low (closer to the waist), your bust level sits low and your armhole goes deep.

  • If your apex from waist is correct, your bust level sits where it actually is on your body, and your armhole fits.

One measurement. Two jobs. The entire armhole depends on getting it right.

This is where it gets even more critical.

In the Chris Sartorial system, you draft the back bodice first. The back armhole measurement then guides the front armhole.

Here’s how it works:

After drafting the front bodice, the front armhole will naturally measure longer than the back. The excess fullness is then rotated into a side bust dart until the front armhole matches the back armhole (or measures slightly shorter by about a quarter inch).

This means if your back armhole is wrong, your front armhole will be wrong. And if your front armhole is wrong, your side bust dart will be wrong. One measurement cascades through the entire bodice.

This is why I stopped at the back bodice. There was no point continuing to the front until the back armhole was right.

Pattern drafting is a system of relationships.

Measurements don’t fail in isolation. One wrong number doesn’t just affect one piece, it ripples through everything connected to it.

The apex from the waist affects the bust level. The bust level affects the armhole depth. The back armhole affects the front armhole. The front armhole affects the side bust dart. The side bust dart affects the entire front bodice fit.

You can’t fix the front if the back is wrong. You can’t fix the armhole if the bust level is wrong. And you can’t fix the bust level if the apex from the waist is wrong.

This is why measurement review before drafting matters so much. Not just checking each number individually, but understanding how each measurement connects to the ones that follow.

If you’ve ever drafted a bodice and couldn’t figure out why the armhole didn’t fit, even though all your other measurements seemed right, the apex from waist might be the culprit.

Here’s how to measure it correctly:

  1. Tie a piece of elastic around your natural waist

  2. Stand straight

  3. Measure from the elastic UPWARD to the fullest part of your bust (nipple point)

  4. Record that number

That’s it. One measurement. But it needs to be accurate.

Measure from the waist UP, not from the shoulder down. The direction matters.

The Chris Sartorial system is one of the most precise bodice drafting methods I’ve encountered.

It accounts for:

  • Separate front and back bodice lengths

  • Individual bust projection through the apex point

  • The relationship between back and front armhole

  • The L-shaped armhole adjustment for larger busts

This precision is exactly why one wrong measurement shows up so clearly. The system is only as accurate as the measurements you feed it.

That’s not a weakness. That’s actually a strength, it forces you to measure correctly.

I’m sharing this because I think a lot of fit frustration comes from not knowing which measurement is causing the problem.

You know something is wrong. You can see it in the toile. But you don’t know where to look.

For bodice fit, especially armhole fit, start with the apex from waist.

Check that it’s measured correctly (from the waist UP). Check that it reflects where your bust actually sits today (not where it sat five years ago). Check that it’s consistent with your other measurements.

The measurement you’ve never heard of might be the one that’s been causing your fit problems all along.
