2001 Vine St, Kansas City, MO 64108 (Map)
Opened: 1897

Built in 1897 at 2001 Vine Street, the City Workhouse Castle was constructed with inmate-quarried limestone in Romanesque Revival style.

It housed petty criminals and vagrants who labored on city projects like rock-breaking and sewing uniforms.

After closing as a correctional facility in 1924, it served various roles, including a Marine training camp and public works office, before being abandoned in 1972.

Recent efforts to renovate and restore the historic castle have been unsuccessful.
