Anton Losenko- Miraculous Catch (1762)

Losenko was a founder of the Russian Empire’s historical‑painting tradition, whose influence wasn’t confined to his canvases. His teaching manual shaped academic training well into the mid‑19th century, and a generation of artists passed through his studio, including painters Ivan Akimov and Grigory Ugrymov, along with the sculptor Mikhail Kozlovsky.

His legacy lingered far beyond the Imperial era. In 1972, the Soviet postal service honored him with a stamp featuring his art — a small but telling nod to how firmly he remained in the cultural bloodstream.
