I met a potential mom friend at the park last week! AJ ran up to her toddler since they were the only two little ones adventuring off on the “big kid side”. I try to stay as present as possible at the park (I have a strict no scrolling rule) for safety reasons but also because it has become my college campus! A place to be around women in similar phases of life who are looking for a little female connection.
She came over, immediately making small talk! She asked me about AJ's sleep schedule, I asked her about potty training. We chatted for about 10 minutes, it was refreshing! I could tell she was starting to gather her little one to head out, and as we said our goodbyes she said, 'We should grab coffee sometime!' Of course I said yes. We both meant it.
Will it actually happen? Probably not.
This type of interaction is a dime a dozen, and every time I leave the conversation thinking wow I’d love to hang with that queen! Unfortunately, the reality of motherhood makes it nearly impossible to actually follow through. Coordinating schedules, finding childcare, actually following through, it’s harder than people think. The gap between ‘we should connect’ and actually connecting is wide.
This is why I’m starting Mid Bloom. If I'm being honest, I'm 6 months into living in NYC and my attempt at building a community isn't going that well. While this won't replace my in-person efforts, I'm still showing up at the park, still saying yes to coffee dates (even if they don't stick). I’m looking forward to creating a space for other women like me, who just need a little bit more support in their lives.
I’m excited to share the raw motherhood moments, the ones that leave me shocked to the core. To vent and reflect on who I’m becoming as a mother. To be brutally honest about what marriage looks like when it’s intertwined with motherhood. To talk about real mom life: budgets, routines, hacks, the not so fun but necessary stuff.
I’ve already been brainstorming, and you can be on the look out for some topics like:
Why my daughter’s meltdowns teach me more about myself than any therapy session
How my marriage survived the first year of motherhood (spoiler: who you marry matters, like a lot)
The NYC activities that actually work on a budget
How to make toddler days go faster when you’re stuck in the house
Building my dream career and what that looks like with a toddler
I’m posting 1x a week, Thursdays! As someone who’s been online for a long time, I haven’t felt this excited about something in the digital space in a while. I really hope you all enjoy and I can’t wait for next Thursday!
