You know what’s weird? Algorithms. When I wrote To Light Their Way and Every Season Sacred, the internet world was different. Instagram actually let us see the content from the people we followed! Our Facebook feeds were updates from actual people in our lives without weird AI-generated videos popping up from weird bot accounts. Twitter was still Twitter, not whatever mishmashed monster X has become. The Internet was just…different.
And you know what? This new weird wide web landscape we find ourselves in is quite…challenging when launching a book into the world.
How do I share this deep work, this devotional that I genuinely believe is so different than any other Christian daily devotional out there?
It feels like I have a boulder on my shoulders, and I’m like Kate Bush, runnin’ up that hill. I just need a little support to get to the finish line.
I’m fortunate that my publisher believes in Our Daily Breath as much as I do, and they’re allowing me to assemble a launch team to help readers discover this collection of daily breath prayers and reflections.
(Did I say assemble just to briefly imagine us as the Avengers? Obviously yes.)
Basically, I’m just a girl, sitting in front of a computer, asking you to commit to journeying alongside me for 30 days.
You’ll get an early digital copy of the book and the full 90-day audiobook version. (SUPER excited about this! You can listen to one every day, like a tiny 3-minute podcast. It will be a standalone audiobook you can purchase down the road, but it’s not out yet!).
You’ll get daily breath prayers and access to giveaways and group-only calls with me where I promise to be as honest as I can about ALLTHETHINGS.
And of course, you get all the preorder swag too.
The hope is that you’ll spend a little time with the book, experience the peace that comes nestled in something as small as a two-second breath prayer, and share your honest review with others.
So, whaddya say? Will you make me the happiest girl in the world?
Please say yes, please say yes
(Well, actually, the whole book pushes against that toxic positivity and is more about wholeness and true belonging, not momentary happiness, but you get the idea. Also please tell me you heard Dylan from Love On The Spectrum when you read that button above. )
For real though…
I don’t know your story, but I know you.
You don’t know how much more your heart can break with each new passing headline. You’re overwhelmed by the news. You’re overwhelmed by grocery costs. You’re overwhelmed with responsibility, but you also feel so deeply alone more often than not.
You want to connect with God in your real life, but you’re tired. Or like you’re unsure of what you believe or even what faith can look like. Or maybe you feel like you’re just…doing it wrong. (Whatever it is.)
Let’s be honest here. You’ve seen a lot of folks who claim to be Christians act nothing like Christ.
You want to trade cynicism for hope, but you’re unsure where to start. You’re burned out by Christianese. You feel empty when you read clichés that don’t connect with your lived experiences. Your silent doubts sometimes feel like they’ll swallow you whole.
You’re tired. You’re exhausted, really.
You’re in the thick of work or parenting or caregiving. You’re navigating complex relationships. You’re more connected than ever before, yet loneliness blooms inside your chest.
You’re looking around at all that’s asked of you and just feel like you can’t catch your breath.
You’re just trying to make it through the day.
And still, something in you whispers that you’re not alone.
You believe that life is bigger than what you can see. You believe that love is worth fighting for. You’ve tasted what it is to know and be known, to love and be loved. You’ve seen beauty and believe it might have the power to change the world if we let it.
You believe that despite all the weeds that twist and turn all around us, hope still grows. And that maybe, just maybe, you have a Creator that won’t leave or forsake you—even though the mystery of that sentence is impossible to fully understand.
Even with all the muck and mire of real life, you hold on to hope.
You want to cultivate and tend to rhythms of peace in your neighborhood, in your city, in your country, in your world.
But you don’t know where to begin.
Prayer feels like a have-to. Scripture feels inaccessible. Deep down, you’re worried that maybe faith is just not for you.
I wrote Our Daily Breath Devotional: 365 Prayers and Practices that Whisper Peace in a Shouting World for you.
This is the daily reading I need. Because I’m just like you.
Our stories all take different shapes, but so many of us have been holding our breath for far too long.
Every day as I sat down to write this book, I asked myself: What would it look like to offer an exhale?
This is a daily devotional that does all the work for you so all you have to do is breathe. The daily reading is dated (August 23, August 24, etc). The Scripture passage is printed right at the top (and in accessible translations). The breath prayer is simple and short.
The reflection follows these beats: contemplation, action, and sacred in the ordinary.
This is a book to put on your coffee table or nightstand. To open to hope to borrow and words to make your own. To see that pop culture references can coexist alongside daily bits of prayer. To hold joy and sorrow, beauty and pain. To remember that the greatest of these is love.
At your command, O Lord, at the blast of your breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare. PSALM 18:15 (nlt)
INHALE: Your breath
EXHALE: Is power
Our Creator’s breath is love embodied. It’s powerful and tender, gentle and strong. God breathes, and the sea splits into two. The same divine breath in the psalmist’s song still holds everything in motion, including you.
We live and move in holy respiration.
Though most days we hardly notice it, every divine inhale and exhale keeps the whole world spinning. We’ve never known an existence where God is not. Maybe that’s why it’s so easy to take God’s presence for granted in our everyday lives.
More often than I care to admit, I forget to ask God to breathe into a situation when I’ve come up short every other way. It’s easy to turn to prayer only when we need something.
But what if prayer were less a last resort and more a rhythm of breathing with God?
Breath prayer lets us “pray without ceasing”— carrying an ongoing conversation with God throughout our days. Each inhale and exhale tunes our hearts to be more aware of just how marvelous it is that we get to live alongside our Maker.
Every week, paid subscribers get a breath prayer for each day of the week, reflection questions to help you connect with God and the people in your life, a new themed playlist, a simple spiritual practice to borrow, and more.
Pssst…if you preorder, you get 30 days of a paid subscription absolutely free!
