Although most of my articles on the Ken Kaufman Blog directly concern the state of healthcare, I am equally interested in the leadership qualities necessary in the contemporary socioeconomic environment—within hospitals and beyond.
In 2009, my colleague Mark Grube and I wrote an article about the likely effects of the 2008 recession—the worst since the 1930s—which had left many hospitals with weakened balance sheets and severely reduced capital capacity, and some unable to recover or with finances so compromised that they could no longer compete.
Many thanks to Scott Becker for having me on his excellent podcast to discuss the founding of Kaufman Hall, the evolution of hospitals over the past 40 years, and three important roads for establishing long-term competitive position for hospital organizations.
