A couple of weeks ago, I took this picture at the Milwaukee airport, right after passing through security. I didn’t know there was a name for the place where you collect your belongings from their gray bins and find a bench to slip into the high heels that the metal detector always rejects. Now I do: Recombobulation Area.

When I got home, I did a deep dive via On Milwaukee and learned this is the world’s only Recombobulation Area. Former airport director Barry Bateman coined “recombobulation” as the name for the process of putting yourself back together after the stress and indignities of TSA screening and somehow persuaded the TSA to approve the signs.

This word stands the test of time as far as I’m concerned. I need more recombobulation areas in my life to make sense of what I’m choosing to leave behind and what’s critical to the next journey.

We all need a pause to pull ourselves together, laptops and shoes in hand, before trying to find our next connection.
