Tuesday night I hung art in the dining room of one of my favorite local restaurants, Bouldin Creek Cafe! The title of my collection is “Pretty, Pink, and Poisonous” because I wanted an autumn vibe without overwhelming orange. Orange is my least favorite color. Plus, most of the dining room walls are yellow brick so I needed contrast. I've been working on this collection for awhile, and really enjoyed pulling it together. It'll be up through November 5th, and then on the 7th I start hanging art for the Austin Studio Tour! It's a bit of a dumpster fire this year, but I'm excited to be showing at Coco Coquette! The art will be up for awhile but I'll be in the shop for EAST weekend, November 16th and 17th.

And my artist statement-
Vessels & Portals is a collection of work by Katie Cowden that explores symbols of transformation in the mediums of wood and acrylic paint. Vessels, spaces of holding, and portals, spaces of movement, both reveal depths and possibilities of self.
Katie explores transformation in the natural world through animals such as snakes that shed their skin, insects, plants that grow from seeds or bulbs, and celestial objects such as the changing phases of the moon. Each piece in this collection embodies the transformative possibilities of art, as wood bases rescued from the landfill via thrift stores and creative reuse centers, laser cut shapes primarily cut from wood scraps, and acrylic paint are fused into vessels and portals.
This will be my first time on the Austin Studio Tour showing all fine art, no jewelry. It's a big risk for me during a year when sales are down for small businesses everywhere. It's a make or break moment- can I balance art and jewelry? Is my art made from trash going somewhere, such as future gallery shows? Basically, can I get away with this? I really freaking hope so, I can't go back to working for other people.
On the 1st, I celebrated (by working) 11 years of Killer Queen Designs! I moved into my beloved Pump Project (RIP) warehouse studio with dumpster furniture and painted tentacles on the wall in 2013. Here I am now with a business that takes up most of my house!
October is my favorite and busiest month, so I need to get away from the computer and back in the studio. Support a small business today!
