On Fridays, I meet with a group to share our creative journeys. This past week, the person who led began with the question, “Where are you meeting creativity these days?”
May so far has been a month of transitions: moving artwork, moving people, end of the semester, a shift in seasons. It was helpful to reflect on the ways creativity is meeting me in these experiences.
My Mother Trees Series is on display through August in Shirlington Library in Arlington, Virginia. I’m grateful to the library for hosting exhibits and to my son, Kevin for his help with hanging the work.
In April I had the surprise of finding spring monarch caterpillars. I began May with two dozen visitors on our porch.
As of Sunday, we have 22 monarch chrysalises on our back porch. By the end of the month, we will have some butterflies. They really are wonders of beauty, mystery, and life. It is a gift to get to see their lives and transformations up close.
In other transitions, Kevin finished his third year of college, and we all traveled to Cleveland to help Ryan move into a new house. The house was built in 1880, and I fell in love with the neighborhood and the light in the front room.
Our visit to Cleveland also included my first trip to the magical Loganberry Books bookstore. I highly recommend it if you find yourself in Cleveland, Ohio. I would even venture to say it would be worth a special trip.
My printmaking projects have included printing the color wheel table of contents for my book and a series of playful octopuses. I plan to work on a series of the monarch life cycle stages next.
In book news, my proposal is ready to go, and I am beginning the process of querying agents to help me find a publisher. This feels like a big transition too. I am moving outward from a process that has been quiet and reflective and mostly solitary. I am moving toward finding a team to help me bring my words and vision into book form and available to readers. I feel both excited and a bit apprehensive about this process. And it helps to remember that creativity is part of this transition too.
