A little silver gem for you this week as I am taking a week off to go to the beach with the family. I’ll be back next week with a bumper post for you all.
Following last week’s post on the life of a trend it seemed to make sense to follow on with some silver pieces available in the shops right now. If you missed it you can read it here.
If you did read it you will remember I mentioned my son’s girlfriend arriving for dinner carrying two items she had salvaged from a shoot. Both were from Ikea. A vase (filled with pretty pink and white flowers) and a curved serving dish. Both, more to the point were silver. Well, stainless steel to be more exact.
Then the other day my other son announced that he was currently picking up cheap silver trays and items on eBay. Now he’s one to pay attention to as three years ago he said he wanted to replace a wall in his bedroom with glass bricks. And I don’t know if you have noticed but, much like silver, glass bricks are currently turning up in all the magazines and high end interior design projects so get ready because they’re coming too
TLDR: It’s on the high street and it’s being used in the background of adverts which is how you know something is trending.
If you still look at the advertisement pages of glossy magazines it’s always worth taking a moment to look beyond the item that is being advertised to the props in the background; the wall colour, the style of the chair, the metals, patterns and shapes.

The joy of something becoming trendy if you like it is that it often becomes affordable too as there is so much of it about. So if you don’t care about trends (and I suspect many of you don’t) but you have been hankering after a particular thing then now’s the moment and when the fashion wagon moves on you can simply sit back and enjoy what you’ve got.
The exception, of course, is vintage. When sellers spot a trend their pieces become more valuable just at the momebt the high street is flooded with cheap versions. That said it’s better to buy vintage if you can as you will find something more original, often better made and probably unique, or at least you are unlikely to walk into your friend’s house and see the same vase on the table which is highly likely if you buy the Ikea one. I know this because my son’s girlfriend has one. And so do I.
And that’s where we came in. Below are my picks for vintage silver items that are around at the moment as well as how to style a trending item in your home.
VINTAGE SILVER
The Ikea nesting tables are on 1st Dibbs where they cost $1,500 and the tubular smoked glass nesting tables next to them are on eBay for £52. So when things are on trend it makes sense to look vintage and look around.

Lastly if you fall for a trend and want to bring it into your home you must just give it something to talk to - a lone silver side table in a forest of wood can feel random. Just make sure you have a silver candlestick or a picture frame - something small - to give it a reason to be there.
It’s the same principle as painting a single wall in a bold colour but taking it round the skirting boards to introduce it to the rest of the room. No-one likes turning up at a party on their own if they don’t know anyone else there. Just as you want one person to say hello to, so your new arrival just needs and introduction - a reason for the invite and then everyone relaxes.
