It’s always tempting to minimize your own story before someone else does. Better to shrug nonchalantly about the impact of some experience than to risk the humiliation of having people question whether you have the right to your reaction. Better yet to stay silent. I am writing this essay anyway because I want to be candid about a recent experience that affected me deeply. I want to document the particulars of what happened to me for the usual reasons I write when I write personally in this space: to find a basis for solidarity with all of the other women who have faced something similar. I write, in other words, not as the exception but the rule of female embodiment.
