Hannah’s Point of View

“Who is he?”

“David Pike. A very old boyfriend. Three months, fifteen years ago.”

“Okay.”

He paused. Josh only ever paused when he thought he was treading across a line.

“He means nothing.”

“You’re angry, Hannah. That can’t mean nothing.”

I stepped closer and let the anger drain somewhere useful—a combination of my will and his.

“While he dated me, David stalked other women. Stalked, Josh—not unfaithful. Unfaithful, I could have handled at nineteen. His kink was fear. The look on a woman’s face when he turned up where he couldn’t be. It starts as boyish charm, a meet-cute in a bookstore where you never expected him to be, then it runs through an adventurous phase, and ends with him outside a bedroom window at two in the morning, working a gap in the curtains.”
