Julie Kwon is a Korean-American illustrator and picture book artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work is warm, emotionally nuanced, and full of tenderness.

Julie studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and since then has published 7 books!

Her latest, I am sorry you got Mad was listed as on many best book of the year lists, the New York Public Library Best Books of 2024 among them.

Julies illustrations often balance delicate textures with bold shapes and expressive characters. The dynamic and tender lines in her work remind me of why drawing is so much fun! We share a studio and even more than her beautiful work, I appreciate the way she thinks about life and this profession.

I am so excited to talk to Julie about her path into children’s publishing, how she develops visual narratives, how to work on long term projects and her tools to stay inspired. and also how to deal with not being inspired sometimes.
