A few weeks ago, my sister-in-law sent me the most incredible video on Instagram. It was of a bird, perched on his owner’s arm, riffing through the wondrously eclectic library of sounds he could make. There were camera clicks, trills, cat-like meows, motorcycle revs and noises that sounded like extracts of synth-pop tracks. The bird was also physically impressive, with a long beak and distinctive plumage.
For a moment, I marvelled at it. I even clicked the share button, ready to forward the video on.
& Then, I was struck by sudden, incredibly disappointing thought:
“It’s not real. Duh. It’s AI.”
Silly Karla.
I’ve since done my research and discovered that the bird was, in fact, totally real. A European Starling, apparently. I was right to be amazed by it!
Hooray, right?
Right?
I don’t know. Perhaps it’s just me. But I think there’s a strange feeling that comes with discovering something you dismissed as AI was real after all. Like when the ref reveals that, after several joyless minutes of …
